Project Brief

Marisa Rodriguez needed a car to get to work. She couldn't afford to buy one, and because she had a limited credit history, she couldn't get a loan. Alfalfa Studio collaborated with Ford Foundation to tell the story of Marisa’s problem and solution in an engaging, compelling and accessible way.

Approach

In a playful collage animation style, we illustrated how new partnerships between philanthropy and business are disrupting the status quo to bring much-needed capital to underserved communities.

Working closely with the Ford Foundation team, Alfalfa Studio created original collage illustrations, produced dozens of branded backgrounds, directed the story and animation, and supervised all production and post-production aspects, including sound effects and commissioning of original music.

Frame-by-frame, our carefully planned storyboard explained the problem and the solution: how difficult it is for low-income consumers with no credit history to get a loan, and how the Ford Foundation and companies like Core Innovation Capital and Progreso Financiero are changing the way the system works to make it easier for low-income consumers to build good credit history.

Outcome

The video successfully turns a complex storyline into a more accessible and human narrative. The video is a key component of a larger piece of digital content titled, Where Markets Lead, Will Justice Follow? Hosted within the Ford Foundation website, this multi-part thought-piece features multimedia elements and interviews with prominent change-makers.
