Derriere la Camera Alfalfa New York’s USA Star Photoshoot

Last weekend we took over the streets of New York City to shoot Alfalfa New York’s latest design: USA Star.

As new immigrants, we are proud to be part of America, a country that welcomes everyone with a dream. Alfalfa launched the USA Star to thank the United States for all the wonderful opportunities, magical times and amazing friends. In these challenging times, the new iconic image helps us express that “we still believe.”

The symbol designed by legendary type master Tony Di Spigna (exclusively for Alfalfa New York) is quickly becoming an icon. Mr. Di Spigna designed the USA Star as a symbol of hope for America in a time of uncertainty and challenges. It is available on T-Shirts, denim and canvas bags from Alfalfa New York. Place your order today and join the millions of other Americans who believe in the American dream and what the USA stands for.

In the meantime, we love to share with you few images from behind the scenes captured by designer extraordinaire (and Alfalfa’s own) Guillaume Boucher. Read more

New Yorkers will experience the poetic and poignant work of artist Laura Anderson Barbata as her magnificent suits will be worn by the Brooklyn Jumbies. This is art responding to the global economic crisis. On a 12ft high business suits, Anderson Barbata’s wearable sculptures will parade through NY’s Wall Street, a spectacle not to be missed.

She is inviting to participate and support the intervention/dance by wearing a business suit.

The Legacy of the Art Center College of Design Catalogs

One of the main reasons I decided to go to Art Center College of Design to complete my art education was because of their stunning printed materials, particularly its school catalog.

In my initial search to attend the right art school, after I identified them, the first thing I did was to order by phone their marketing materials (this is before Google and before Email). I received packages from some of the most prestigious colleges all over the United States. I spent countless hours fascinated devouring all the information, the booklets, posters, reading description of classes and looking at the impressive work of their alumni. My finalists were RISDI, SVA, CalArts, Otis, Parsons, Pratt and Art Center College of Design. Read more

Andrea Dezsö Haunted Ridgefield Exhibition

One-of-a-kind hand-made embroidery

For a long time I’ve wanted to create a post about Andrea Dezsö, one of my favorite designer/artists working today. We met back in the 90s during the so-called “dot com” boom era. She was an interactive designer for iXL and I was working at Radical Media. We both had our beloved sketchbooks. Years later, I’m excited to see where her creative journey has taken her. Her inspiring excursions in the art world include writing, directing animation, puppetry, embroidery, making murals, subway art and illustrating books amongst others. It’s been a treat to watch it all. In fact, every time I see Under The Garden, her whimsical poster now in display inside the New York City subway trains, makes me smile.

Haunted Ridgefield exhibition. October 31 to December 31, 2011

Her latest creation is a site-specific for the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum opening on Halloween. Her skills in traditional, labor intensive, hand-crafted book-making, will take the form of a diorama, in this not-to-be-missed show. I’ve been told that a series of cut-out panels will reveal layers of a hallucinatory narrative featuring fantasy worlds and idiosyncratic characters. This kind of vision can only come out of Andrea Dezso’s imagination. Read more

Adios, Farewell, Ciao, Sayonara, Au Revoir Laura Cuñat!

Collage in boxes, a personal project

One of the joys of running a small design studio is working with interns. I’ve been lucky to have the opportunity of both, mentor and learn from these young curious minds starting their creative journey.

There have been many talented young designers who have walked through Alfalfa Studio’s doors. Some of them are already making their mark in the design world. I’m always thrilled when I see them succeed.

Being a small shop, our interns become like family. Often, I have bittersweet feelings when I see them go. Bitter since they will be missed. We miss their dedication and their unique personalities.—How can we forget the shy ones, the smart ones, the obsessive ones, the clever ones, the methodical ones, the fun ones, the know-it-all ones, the passionate ones, the generous ones, the wild ones, the good-hearted ones, the proud ones, the resourceful ones, the out going ones?— Sweet because I know they have gained something positive. That is, they have acquired new skills that will help them in their future choices. Most of them remain friends.

For the last 10 years, Cubanica has been an integral part of the New York downtown design scene. The studio’s body of work not only includes graphics for posters, books, murals, and apparel amongst others, but also the directing of an award winning documentary and, most importantly, the design and release of original typefaces. Cubanica has given us some of the most iconic fonts of the last 20 years.

From Russia…Welcome Nastia Tumash, Alfalfa’s Summer Intern

Graphic design is not and has never been a simple profession for me… design as a complex field that demands constant mental work, higher artistic sense and courage to make something that no one else has ever done before. I believe I could find this attitude toward design in alfalfa studio. Those were Nastia’s opening lines in her internship application letter.
